The New York Times has a set of articles about meditation. It looks like you can read and try it and you are done. It is like reading a book and watching some movies about gym and just going to the gym and practice. If you do it without professional help at the beginning you may get something but it is much less effective. In most cases a professional should build for you a program that fits your personal needs. Over time your needs change and you may need a different program. It is a good idea to practice by your own but it is very effective when you have a therapist that understands your needs and build for you a custom program and change it over time.
